30th Anniversary Pre-Birkie Dedicated to Richard (Dick) Simono

Since moving to Hayward in 1973, Dick Simono has been intimately involved with the great sport of cross-country skiing. As one of the founding "fathers" of the American Birkebeiner, he was instrumental in getting that great event off the ground. From its infancy, Dick championed the cause to keep the American Birkebeiner here in Hayward where it started and where it belongs. Dick was also a great Lion. And like everything else he took on in life, he gave everything to Lionism as well.

Looking for another way to raise money for Lion's missions, Dick came up with the idea of a "training race" for the American Birkebeiner, and in 1982 the Hayward Lions Pre-Birkie was born. The Pre-Birkie was not only the brainchild of Dick, he directed the race for 20 years as well.

And so, for Dick's unselfish humanitarian work and all he has done for Lionism and the community of Hayward, Wisconsin, we dedicate our 30th Pre-Birkie to our friend, fellow Lion and fine man...Richard (Dick) Simono.

Lions Club International is the largest service organization in the world with 1.3 million members in 185 countries. Worldwide, Lions Clubs are recognized for their service to the blind, visually impaired, and hearing impaired. The Hayward Lions Club is no exception. Through the efforts of our local club, we raise money for the above services. There are many other worthwhile causes, such as sponsoring the Lions Camp in Rosholt, Wisconsin, where local physically and mentally challenged children and adults go for a week at no expense.

Much of the money raised by the Hayward Lions Club stays here in the community. We provide eye exams and glasses for people less fortunate. We are a major sponsor for the Quest Program and D.A.R.E. (Drug Awareness Programs for Adolescents) Programs in our schools.

The Club not only raises funds for community projects, many countless hours of volunteer hours are a major part of the effort. A list of the many projects may be seen on a separate page.
