Lions 50th Anniversary Celebration April 27th a Great Success (view photos)

The Hayward Lions Club celebrated their 50th Anniversary Saturday, April 27, 2013. The banquet was held at The Steakhouse in Hayward, WI. A buffet dinner was served to about 100 Lions Club members and their guests. There were visitors from the following Lions Clubs: Birchwood, Chequamegon, Jim Falls, Lake Wissota, Luck, Rice Lake, Seeley, Shell Lake, Siren, St. Croix Falls, Stone Lake, Turtle Lake, Unity, Wanderoos and Webster.

The honored guests for the evening were: Past International President Wayne Heiman, Past Council Chair Sam Kochel, Past Council Chair Gary Solum, Past Council Chair Bill Taubman, District Governor Ron Edlund, District Governor Elect Marilyn Lemieux, Wisconsin Lions Foundation Director Lee Vrieze, Past District Governor Larry Spies, Past District Governor Karl Schmid, Past District Governor Steve Jensen, Affiliate District President Billie Gravesen, Past Affiliate District President Jeanne, First Vice District Governor Elect Delores LaFaive and Zone Chair Steve George.

The guest speaker was Wayne A. Heiman, Past International Director. His wife Cheryl was also in attendance. The Hayward Lions Club has been fortunate enough to have four Past District Governors since 1994 (Bert Ancel, Russ Haling, Laurie Anderson, Chuck Aubart). Past District Governors of the Hayward Lions Club were recognized as well as numerous Past District Governors from other clubs in Lions International. The current District Governor, Ron Edlund, inducted Scott Burton as a new member into the Hayward Lions Club.

Nancy Grothe received the Presidents Award. Past International President Wayne Heiman and Past District Governor Steve Jensen presented the award to Nancy. This was probably the high point of the evening. The President's Award is one of the very highest awards given by Lions International. Nancy is only the third person in the history of the Hayward Lions Club to receive this award. The other two recipients were: Chuck Aubart and Russ Haling.

The chairperon for the event was Lynell Swenson. Cliff Williams, the current president of the Hayward Lions Club, was the master of ceromonies. At the end of the evening, about 30 percent of those attending went home with a door prize or a raffle prize. It was a very memorable evening.

June 13th Golf Outing

June 13, 2013 — The Hayward Lions Club has held a golf outing for many years. The golf outing this year will be June 13th. There will be a big change in the format for the outing this year. The chairperson for the event, Cliff Williams, announced the outing will be a “Big Cup” event. The size of the cup on the greens will be almost doubled. There will also be some other rule changes from past years but the big change is the venue to a “Big Cup” event. Cliff did some research prior to presenting the change to the club. His findings indicated this type of golfing event would be very popular. In communities where it has been tried — the participants response has been very positive. Please remember the date: June 13, 3013.

Boy Scout Christmas Trees

January 5, 2013 —The Hayward Lions distributed coupons giving people the change to get $5 reduced from the price of a Christmas tree purchased from the Boy Scouts. A total of 12 people took advantage of the discount coupons. The club contributed $60 to the local Boy Scouts.

Hayward Lions Holiday Bell Ringing

January 5, 2013 —The Hayward Lions Club had the Christmas spirit again this year. The club was active in “ringing the bell” for the Salvation Army. The Lions volunteered in several locations but the primary location was Angler's Bar and Grill on Main Street in downtown Hayward. On Friday night, December 14th, the Lions “rang the bell” for the Salvation Army and collected $149.30 from people walking past Angler's. The Hayward Lions matched dollar for dollar the money contributed thus bringing the total collected for the night to $298.60.

During the Christmas holiday season, downtown Hayward featured the theme “Lure of Lights.” Most of the businesses on Main Street had the front of their stores lighted with miniature lights in a very artistic display of lights. In front of Angler's in the patio area on the 14th, there was competition for the best decorated snow shovel. The decorated shovels were very unique — imagine “The Grinch” displayed on a snow shovel!

Lions Install Eyeglass Collection Box at Hayward VFW

December 6, 2012 — The Hayward Lions Club recently put a new receptacle for the collection of glasses out in front of the Hayward Community Center(VFW). The collection box is an old USPS mailbox. The club found out that an old USPS mailbox was available from someone in Spooner, WI. The club made the necessary contact — sand blasted the box — painted the box in the colors of the Lions International. The collection box has been in front of the Hayward Community Center (VFW) for about two months. During that period of time, people in the Hayward community have donated over 250 pairs of glasses.

The Hayward Lions Club has several collection points in Hayward. Maureen Ryan is the Lion responsible for picking up the glasses from the collection points. Chuck Aubart takes the glasses from Maureen and delivers them to the proper representative at the Lions District Convention. The District Convention is an annual affair. At the convention, all of the glasses from the district that have been collected are loaded into a trailer and taken to collection point in southern Wisconsin. The central collection point then goes over each individual pair of glasses and determines the prescription. The glasses are thus sorted and then shipped all over the world. In any given year, Lions International collects/distributes in the hundreds of thousands of pairs of glasses. The Lions motto is: “We Serve.” Lions International is known all over the world as the organization with the goal of preserving sight.

Christmas 4 Kidz Update

December 6, 2012 — Bill Moebs put out the call for toys at our November 15th meeting. Well — when Bill puts out the call — we Lions answer. Today (December 6th) the toys came flowing in. The Lions donated over 40 toys to Christmas 4 Kidz. Christmas 4 Kidz originated as a joint effort between the Hayward Lioness Club and the Hayward Moose Club (women). Due to the fact the old Moose Club has been torn down, Christmas 4 Kidz was looking for new sponsorship. Cliff Williams and Nancy Grothe (both Hayward Lions) are on the board of Christmas 4 Kidz and thus interest. If you are interested in giving toys to Christmas 4 Kidz, please contact Cliff at 715-634-8931.

Lions, Lioness Hold Annual Banquet

December 4, 2012 — The Hayward Lions Club held their Annual Awards Banquet during the fall of 2012 at The Steak House in Hayward, WI. The awards banquet was a joint venture by the Hayward Lions and Lioness clubs. There was a very fine representation of people from both organizations. About 90 people were present for the event. Barb Sealey was the chairperson for the decorations. The program chairperson was Mary Wright. District Governor Ron Edlund and his wife Elaine were present. Governor Ron gave a short speech to the assembled group as part of the program. He listed his priorities for the upcoming year. They are: (1) have some fun at club meetings, (2) increase membership in the Leo Clubs, (3) each club should increase their membership. His message was well received by the group.

Mary Wright and Tom Mansfield presented several “fun” awards to the members. The membership really looks forward to this part of the program each year! In some cases the “fun” awards are treasured almost as much as the regular awards. The major awards and their recipients were: Rookie of the Year was won by Tina Causey, Lion of the Year was won by Gary Nelson, Birch Sturm Award was won by Dick Langton and the Melvin Jones Award was won by Mary Wright.

Hayward Lions Construct New Storage Shed

December 4, 2012 — During the fall of 2012, the Hayward Lions Club built a storage shed for the Galaxie Apartments in Hayward, WI. The shed will be used primarily for the storage of bicycles by the residents of the Galaxie Apartments. The shed is 12 ft. by 16 ft. and the exterior is rough sawed cedar. The Hayward Lions Club split the cost of materials with the organization Trivent Financial for Lutherans. The Lions Club was assisted during the construction by Northwest Oasis of Hayward. The residents of the Galaxie Apartments appreciate the fact they no longer need to leave their bicycles out in the weather — and their bicycles are not nearly as likely to be stolen. After construction was completed on the shed, some of the residents stained the exterior.

Dick Grundstrom was the engineer for the project. Other Hayward Lions helping with the project were: Ray Moeller, Bill Moebs, Tom Mansfield, Bill Weldon, John Moreland and Mark Simono.
